Places of Interest in and around Tikamgarh...

Chandreshekhar Azad Memorial
 
Chandreshekhar Azad Memorial located at Orchha in the Tikamgarh region of Madhya Pradesh, commemorates the martyrdom of the greatest freedom fighters Chandreshekhar Azad, Shahid Smarak. Although this is a present day memorial, its great historical significance, attract huge amounts of people. It was at this place where the revolutionary idol of Indian independence spent his days of exile from 1926 to1927

Chatturbhuj Temple -


Constructed on an enormous stone platform and approached by a sheer flight of steps, the Chatturbhuj Temple was especially built to preserve the image of Rama that lingered in the Ram Raja Temple. Lotus symbols and other emblems of religious implication present the delicate outer ornamentation of the temple. Within, the chamber it is purely plain with high, arched walls highlighting its profound sanctity. There is also a fleet of hidden stairs going to the roof top, which gives a splendid view of the entire area.

Chhatris -


Charmingly perched on the banks of the gorgeous river Betwa, Chhatris has a mesmerizing appeal. The imperial tombs of Emperors, Chhatris are positioned on a lofty platform and is held up by pillars. The domes of the monument are painted wonderfully, which gives it an enthralling appearance to this place.

Dauji Ki Haveli -


Orchha in Tikamgarh has been the heart of trade activities from very early times and this gave birth to the origin of a fresh rank of people identified as merchants. These merchants were not just rich but also very prominent among the ruling administration. And they utilized their capital to build lavish mansions with intricate embellishments and fabulous architecture. These mansions are the imitations of the imperial palaces. In Orchha, these ornamented houses are popularly known as Havelis, the Dauji Ki Haveli is one of the prominent Havelis of the olden times.

Jehangir Mahal-

 
Jehangir Mahal was constructed by Raja Bir Singh Ju Deo in the 17th century to venerate the visit of Emperor Jehangir. The strong lines of this Mahal are balanced with delicate chhatris and lattice work, on the whole transmitting an effect of bizarre richness.

Laxmi Narayan Temple -


The Laxmi Narayan Temple is a remarkable creation of fort and temple moulds. The interiors of this temple have the most wonderful Orchha wall paintings, coating the walls and ceiling of three halls, these frescos are vivacious compositions and cover a range of religious and secular subjects. These paintings are in brilliant state of conservation, with the colors keeping their vivid quality.


Phool Bagh-


Arranged as a ceremonial garden, this compound gives evidence of the sophisticated artistic traits of the Bundelas. The middle line of fountains culminates into an eight pillared palace pavilion. This place is worth visiting in Tikamgarh.

Rai Praveen Mahal -


Rai Praveen Mahal built by Raja Indramani in 1618 for Poetess and musician, Rai Praveen who was also the paramour of Raja Indramani.  

Raj Mahal -


This Mahal was constructed in the 17th century by Madhukar Shah, the extremely religious precursor of Bir Singh Ju Deo. The simple exteriors of this palace, coronet by chhatris, give way to inside with delicate friezes, boldly colored on an array of spiritual themes.

Ram Raja Temple -


Ram Raja Temple is dedicated to Lord Ram. The idols of this temple were meant to be instated in the glorious Chaturbhuj temple, but it is believed that when the idols, were kept on the ground (where they are today), they refused to move. So a makeshift temple was constructed around these idols, which is known as Ram Raja temple.

Rani Mahal -


Beautifully located in the fort compound, Rani Mahal in Orchha is well known for its exquisite paintings and exceptional architecture. Rani Mahal, also known as the Queen’s Chamber was the royal abode of the Queen of Raja Madhukar Shah. A follower of Lord Ram, the queen bedecked her bedroom with murals illustrating scenes from the epics.
Sunder Mahal -


Sunder Mahal palace is almost in ruins but is still a place of pilgrimage for Muslims. Dhurjban, son of Jhujhar, took Islam when he wed a Muslim girl from  Delhi. Sunder Mahal is the place where he retreated after his marriage, and gave himself entirely to spiritual contemplation.
